For Sale By Owner Photos: How to Get Great Listing Photos
When you sell your home on your own, your photos do a lot of the talking. Buyers scroll through listings quickly, and a bright, clean photo is often what makes them stop. You can get strong listing photos without hiring anyone, using the phone in your pocket.
Your options for For Sale By Owner photos
- Shoot them yourself with your phone. It costs nothing and works well when you prepare the house and use good light.
- Shoot them yourself and have them polished. Brightening and straightening makes phone photos look much closer to a professional set.
- Hire a local real estate photographer. Some homeowners prefer to have someone else do the shooting. That is a personal choice.
FSBO Studio is built for the first two. We show you how to shoot, and we polish the photos you upload.
The four steps
- Get your home ready. Declutter, depersonalize, deep clean, add light, and arrange each room. Use the house photo checklist.
- Take your photos. Use your phone, daylight, and the COMPOSE habits. See how to take pictures of a house, the shot list, and the phone camera settings.
- Polish your photos. One Studio Credit at FSBO Studio polishes and brightens one photo, usually back the same day.
- Show it off. Upload your photos when you create your listing on the sites you choose.
Step 1: Get your home ready
Clear surfaces, put away personal items, clean, and open every blind. Presentation is the goal, not renovation. A room with fewer items looks larger and calmer on camera.
Step 2: Take your photos
The COMPOSE habits cover most of what matters: shoot into corners so three walls show, keep the light bright and even, hold the phone just above waist height, keep walls straight, take two or three angles of each room, keep floors level, and stand back to show the whole space. For an average size home, plan on roughly 25 to 35 photos in total.
Step 3: Polish your photos
Editing brightens each photo and fixes the little things. Pick your best photos, upload them, and compare each edited photo to the original to make sure the room still looks like your home. Save your originals either way.

Step 4: Show it off
An ANSI aligned floor plan gives buyers a clear sense of how the home flows, something photos alone cannot always show. The guide includes step by step instructions for creating a listing on major For Sale By Owner sites, showing where to click and which screens appear.
Keep photos honest
Editing should make a photo look better, not mislead a buyer. Basic editing, such as brightening and straightening, usually needs no label. Virtual enhancement changes what is in the photo, and a listing site or local rule may require a label, the original photo, or may not allow it at all. FSBO Studio puts a clear "Virtually staged" label on every virtually staged photo. Check the photo rules where you list.
Everything in one place
The FSBO Studio guide covers getting your home ready, what you need, a shot list, the COMPOSE method, editing, floor plans, photo to video for social media, and step by step instructions for creating a listing on major For Sale By Owner sites. It does not tell you what to enter in your listing.

How many photos should I take?

Can I edit my own listing photos?
Yes. Keep edits honest, and check the labeling rules where you list.
Does FSBO Studio tell me what to put in my listing?
No. We help with preparing and presenting your photos. We do not give real estate, legal, or financial advice, and we do not tell you what to enter in a listing.
